Non-Personal Awareness (NPA)

If you can feel an emotion, say the following statement while holding the intention to release it:

“This [feeling] is not personal.”

If you can’t name the emotion, just feel the feeling and say “This feeling is not personal.”

Keep feeling into the emotion, repeat the phrase, notice releases, and how the feeling continues to subtly change.

I (Mark Reynolds) like to use this statement while I’m doing EFT to get the benefits of both modalities simultaneously.

Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT)

EFT is short for Emotional Freedom Technique and was originally founded by Gary Craig. Watch the video below to learn about the origins of EFT from Gary as well as some more detailed walkthroughs of the technique with Nick and Jessica Ortner.

EFT (Mark Reynolds' Tips)

  • My Setup Statement is “Even though… <issue or feeling>, I unconditionally love and accept myself.” i.e. Even though I’m feeling anxious, I unconditionally love and accept myself.
  • As you release emotions you will often experience a physical symptom that lets you know that something is indeed happening! The most common symptom is yawning. Other symptoms may include tears and watery eyes (with or without yawning), burping, coughing, crying, and even giggling. But some people, like my dad, don’t experience any symptoms at all.
  • Tapping makes me tired and makes some people thirsty. It’s because as your cells collapse (due to energy shifting) and new cells are created, that process uses energy and water to recreate the cells. But it’s also because I do a LOT of yawning! If you can’t sleep, find an issue in your life to tap on. It does the trick for me!
  • While the experts will say to tap between 5 and 12 times per point, I keep tapping there if I feel a subtle tingling feeling. I’ve discovered the tingling feeling is a symptom that there’s something big to be released there!
  • It’s best to do tapping on a feeling while you are experiencing it as that causes the fastest releases. To do this I simply I focus my awareness squarely on the feeling while I tap. At some point my mind wanders because it loses the feeling. Then when I try to find the feeling again… I can’t…. because it’s all gone!
  • Use this technique on memories to witness a profound result. The image or mind movie of the memory will still exist afterwards but there’ll no longer be an emotion attached.
  • You don’t need to verbally say the phrases out loud. You can just think the Setup Statement and tapping phrases.
  • Once you’ve done it a few times and got results, feel free to intuitively experiment with it. Listen to your inner voice and feel your emotions while repeating whatever comes up for you. Make this your own experience. Tap through each point while reciting what emotions you are feeling about the issue. Let it all come out.
  • Let’s say that I’ve named “anxiety” as the feeling to be released. I tend to do one round of tapping while I say “this anxiety” while my awareness is focused on the anxious feeling. The next round I might talk through it as though I’m mentally journaling. I do more rounds of either until the feeling has sufficiently cleared out.
  • An advanced technique to get over a traumatic experience such as a car crash is to do a memory audit of everything you saw, felt, heard, tasted and smelled. These are the various “aspects” of the experience that you’ll need to individually tap on and release.
  • To install a desired feeling you can use this positive Setup Statement instead “Now that I feel <desired feeling>, I unconditionally love and accept myself.” The rest of the process is the same.
